RE:MISSION

Just wanted to tell you about a great upcoming show that I will be in called Re:Mission.

flier_front.jpg

Here's some info:

More than 1,100 newly diagnosed children are treated each year at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles for cancer. If our creativity can inspire at least one child to keep fighting cancer, our mission will be complete.

Re:Mission is a community art project that will benefit children with cancer treated at the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. For one evening only, artists worldwide will be featuring their donated works at Thinkspace Gallery in the arts district located in Silverlake, California on Saturday, June 2nd from 6pm – 11pm. Art pieces will be sold at a discount with 100% of the proceeds supporting the cause. Proceeds from the show will support two things:

1. An art book displaying all donated work from each artist. Copies of this book will be distributed to children with cancer at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.

2. The rest of the proceeds will be donated to support the amazing Mark Taper & Johnny Mercer Artists Program at Childrens Hospital, which offers patients and their family members invaluable coping mechanisms through art, music, and poetry.

The show will also feature custom art furniture designs by Dzuy Doan in collaboration with Kofie, Jenn Porreca, Christian Morin, and Sohaila.

CLOSING PARTY IN THE PITTS

Me & Magmo will be headed back to the almighty Pittsburgh
for the CONCIEVED BULLY closing party..

The party is on Saturday Oct. 27th from 6pm till about 9 or so
at the Digging Pitt Gallery
located at 4417 Butler St. - ph:412.605.0450 for more info
& if for some reason ya wanna fax em: 412.605.0451

For a review of the show by Lissa Brennan of the Pittsburgh City Paper

JC.One was the guest curator of the C*B show & he recently passed over a few
questions for me to answer:

JC : is the devil one of your infuences or is that just your name?

MCA : In many people’s minds the Devil is the ultimate Evil & I am Evil Design, so does that mean that I am part of the Almighty Devil’s master ‘design’ or master plan!? - No.
I am not a member of the Church of Satan, although I would liked to have met Mr. Anton Lavey.
He seemed to have his thing going good for him & he always had hot ladies around the house.
I use the term ‘Evil’ in my name in a more ironic way. Evil that is dreamt up in the minds of suburban moms who find the ‘Diary of a Madman’ record under their daughters bed. The Evil that is used to describe youth gone wild that are loose running in the streets, this is the evil I enjoy.
I think that people need to look towards the Three Stooges to see the actual divine plan.
One Stooge represents God, One Stooge represents the Devil & One Stooge represents Man. You must look deep inside yourself to choose which is which & learn from this.
I have gained must information & influence from this blue print of the Three Stooges.

JC : What lead you to designing and were you determined from the beginning to get involved with toys?

MCA : I always have drawn pictures ever since I can remember.
I learned to draw from my grandfather; not in an academic way, but just from observing and drawing with him. It was just a thing that I never stopped doing.
As far as becoming a ‘designer’ - I dunno, I just still do what I always did, draw goofy characters & stuff.
Once they get applied to record covers, t-shirts or toys – now you’re a designer.
As far as having a determination to design toys from the get-go – no.
I had no clue I would ever get the opportunity to design my own toys.
One day I got an email from Toy2R & that was my starting point.
Designing toys has been the most fun I’ve had in the ‘design’ world,
it’s pretty awesome when a box of your newest toys comes in the mail & you get to rip it open and hold the finished piece.

JC : I remember we spoke about your "Simian Show", is the ape based on a real life person or is it a representative of an idea?

MCA : The ‘Simian Nation™’ show in Boston was at a shop/gallery called The Lab.
I just wanted to do a show all based around my Evil Ape character.
As far as the ape being based on an actual person, not really, more of a big mix.
I do think artists put themselves into their work & I do like giving people a dead stare now & again,
but that’s where the similarities end.. I think.
We’re all monkeys anyways – right? So take your pick.
(It would have been great to have Billy Barty do the voice in an Evil Ape cartoon, I picture an older Ape talking like that.)

So yea, if you think you may stop by & say hello &/or if ya know any crazy places to check out while we are in town - let me know

PEEL 'SOLD OUT'

peel_sold_out_flyer.jpg

PEEL Magazine art opening and book signing

When: 6-10 p.m., April 4. Show stays up until April 30.
Where: Alias Gallery, 1043 Virginia Ave.
Cost: Free event; “PEEL: The Art of the Sticker” books are $33.
Info: (317) (317) 374-9416; www.peelmagazine.com.

PEEL Magazine launches new sticker-art book

Located in the Murphy Art Center in Fountain Square, Peel Magazine and its gallery, Alias, are celebrating the release of “PEEL: The Art of the Sticker,” a book chronicling PEEL’s innovative coverage of street art. The April 4 event includes both a book signing with authors Dave and Holly Combs and the opening of “Sold Out,” a show featuring work by 30 artists included in the book.

PEEL Magazine, now in its fourth year, is the first street-art magazine with a focus on stickers. “Peel: The Art of the Sticker,” which sells for $33 and was designed by MTV art director Shelly Fukushima and published by Mark Batty, includes 69 art stickers bound into each book. All book purchases come with additional stickers donated by the artists.

“Though the artists in the show employ a very wide range of styles and techniques and represent diverse cultures, they all use the sticker as a medium for their work – and that makes it highly accessible,” said Holly Combs.

Artists in the show come from all over the world. They include: Shepard Fairey (Obey Giant), Seen, Buff Monster, Klutch, DAVe Warnke, MCA / Evil Design, Abe Linclon Jr., Dolla', Foob, Capish, 14 Bolt, Mildred, Miss Venus, BilliKid, Sesper, C. Damage, Evoker, Mathew Curran, Coallus, Zoltron, NiceBunny, Stomach, Mad One, me love, 20mg, This is Process, Cherrycore, and Magmo.

PEEL got its start after Dave and Holly Combs traveled to New York City to assist with Sept. 11 recovery efforts. While exploring Manhattan during their off hours, they were inspired by the wealth of stickers they saw all over the city. In the years since, PEEL evolved from a black and white zine stuffed into plastic bags to a full-size, glossy, internationally distributed magazine. Their new book documents the development of both PEEL and the sticker culture.

“We’re helping add yet another tool to an artist's arsenal in the form of the sticker,” Dave Combs said. “PEEL Magazine and our new book work to showcase sticker art’s social and aesthetic power.”
